Celebrating World Occupational Therapy Day with Moxie OT

Every year on October 27, people around the world celebrate World Occupational Therapy Day. Created by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT), this day highlights the incredible impact occupational therapy has in helping people live meaningful, independent, and fulfilling lives.

But what exactly is occupational therapy? At its core, OT is about helping people engage in the activities—big or small—that matter most to them. These can be daily routines like cooking, dressing, or managing a morning routine; work or school tasks; leisure activities; or participating in the community. When illness, injury, or disability makes these tasks difficult, occupational therapists provide strategies, adaptations, and education to restore independence, confidence, and quality of life.

Occupational therapists work with people across the lifespan. At Moxie OT, we specialize in supporting adults recovering from stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI). These events can dramatically change how someone moves, thinks, and engages in daily life. Even familiar spaces, like the home, can feel challenging or unsafe. That’s where Moxie OT makes a difference.

Our approach is home-based and client-centered. By providing therapy in the places where people live and carry out daily activities, we can tailor strategies to real-world challenges. This allows us to address not only physical limitations but also cognitive, sensory, and environmental factors that impact daily life.

How Home-Based OT Helps After Stroke or TBI

Some examples of the strategies and activities we provide in clients’ homes include:

  • Fall prevention and safety adaptations: Installing grab bars, optimizing furniture layout, or recommending assistive devices to reduce risks while moving around the home.

  • Morning and evening routine rebuilding: Breaking routines into manageable steps, using visual or written cues, and creating predictable schedules to improve independence and reduce stress.

  • Meal preparation and kitchen safety: Teaching adaptive techniques to chop, stir, and cook safely, enabling clients to regain confidence in preparing meals.

  • Energy conservation and pacing strategies: Helping clients manage fatigue and cognitive load while completing daily tasks.

  • Cognitive and memory support: Using checklists, timers, and task sequencing strategies to support attention, planning, and organization.

  • Community reintegration: Preparing clients to participate safely in social activities, appointments, or errands while building confidence in their abilities.

By working directly in the home, we can see firsthand how the environment supports or hinders daily function, making therapy more practical, personalized, and effective. Each small success—walking safely across the kitchen, preparing a favorite meal, or completing a morning routine independently—is a powerful step toward living life fully.

World OT Day is more than a celebration of a profession—it’s a recognition of the resilience, creativity, and determination of the people we serve. Through home-based occupational therapy, Moxie OT empowers individuals recovering from stroke or TBI to regain independence, confidence, and safety in the spaces that matter most.

On this World Occupational Therapy Day, we celebrate not only the profession of OT but the courage and determination of every client who chooses to move forward with support, guidance, and empowerment.
