Surviving and Thriving During the Holiday Season

After a stroke or brain injury the holidays can come with added challenges. Traveling to visit friends and family can be difficult, especially in inclement weather as we often experience here in Chicago. The celebrations themselves come with their own challenges. Loud noise, difficulty navigating the space, managing food and beverages can all make the party more stressful. Below are a few of our favorite tips and tricks to help you thrive this holiday season. Make a plan in advance.

  • What time will you need to leave for the party? How long can you stay at the party comfortably? Do you need to ask your host for any accommodations?
  • Call your host in advance.
  • Before the party, call your host and let them know your needs. Will you need to leave early so you don’t get too tired?
  • Do you have any dietary restrictions they need to be aware of? Do you need to ask your host to have a chair you can sit in comfortably available? Will you need assistance to enter their home?
Your host wants you to enjoy their party, let them know your needs so you can both have fun.
  • Give yourself grace.
  • Not feeling up to it today? Don’t feel comfortable traveling in this weather? Give the host a call and let them know why you won’t be attending. Then snuggle up with a holiday movie and care for yourself.

A little planning ahead can go a long way. Take a few minutes in advance to think about how you can best enjoy your holiday celebrations. Then at the party you will be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the season!
